SPINNER MAGNETOMETER

Agico JR6A

Spinner Magnetometer: List

PRIMARY USE

Archaeomagnetic Dating

The JR6A spinner magnetometer calculates the strength and direction of the magnetic field of a sample. These allow us to construct and compare to a record of the Earth's magnetic field over time to date a sample.

SIMPLE STATS

Sample Size: 2cm cube / 2.5cm cylinder

Sensitivity: 2.4e-6 A/m

Maximum Moment: 12,500 A/m

Hi/Lo speeds to accommodate fragile samples

PRIMARY MEASUREMENT

The spinner magnetometer measures the magnetic moment of a sample by spinning it between two sensors. Doing so on all three axes of rotation allows direction to be calculated as well. In an effort to filter out the signal from the noise, these measurements have to be taken in a step-wise process. Between each step the sample undergoes a magnetic "cleaning", either by heating it or exposing it to a strong magnetic field. Eventually the signal is entirely erased, but in the process we have collected enough information for confident results.
